The Quola Historian would like to apologize to all visitors to the page who have been wondering what happened to the Quola History postings. Unfortunately, I have been working off very old tapes, which are becoming quite fragile. When I began to have trouble getting some of the tapes to play at all, I decided to try to copy the Quola scenes onto new tapes that I could then use to continue with the Quola History. I haven't had the time to work on this recently, and am afraid to run the original tapes for any other purpose because I don't know how many viewings are left on these tapes. I particularly regret that this problem arose now, since May and June are full of wonderful engagement and wedding scenes, which I was looking forward to sharing with all of you. Please do not give up on Quola History. A few days may be missing, or may not be as detailed as I would like, because of the problem with the tapes, but I have every intention of getting Quola History back on track very soon. Please keep visiting this section from time to time. There's a lot of Quola History left to come.

Nola is sitting on the couch in the study when Quint walks in, kisses her good morning, and asks why she's up so early. Nola answers that she can't sleep because there's so much to plan for the wedding. Quint offers to make her a deal, she does all the work and he'll simply enjoy the celebration, but Nola informs him that he's going to work on it too because it's his wedding too. Quint answers that he's sorry, he must have lost his head. They talk about the party the night before and Nola says that she thinks everyone really enjoyed it. Quint adds "even Vanessa . . . after the 6th glass of champagne". He then suggests that they should set the date for the wedding before they start planning the reception. Nola says that she wants to be married in June, because her mother was married in June and all girls want to be married in June, then she goes back to her plans for the reception. Quint pushes her to pick an actual date, and she tells him that it's not that simple, that the date has to be special. He responds that the fact that it's their wedding day will make it special. Nola gathers up all of her papers and has Quint sit down on the floor beside her. She says that she thinks that they are going to have the best wedding that any two people ever had, and Quint agrees, then kisses her and starts to nuzzle her ear. He is amazed by all the information that she had about planning the wedding, and is very surprised to learn that there are magazines just for brides. Quint suggests June 10, but Nola says no because that's the day she had her tonsils out. She then suggests June 22, which Quint rejects because he was on a dig that had a lot of problems when he was 22, so he doesn't like anything with the number 22. Nola teases that he's just as superstitious as she is. Finally they decide on June 24th. Quint asks Nola if she plans to take his last name, and she says she's not sure. He tells her that he'd like for her to take his name, and then adds that he's thinking about changing his name to Chamberlain. Nola responds "a rose by any other name..." and Quint says "my own Juliet", then kisses her. Quint and Nola go to the boarding house to tell Bea and Tony that they have set the date. Nola gets a little nervous when Bea starts talking about reserving the church for the ceremony, but Quint says that he thinks his mother would have wanted him to be married in a church. Quint offers to drop Bea off at the rectory on his way to Spaulding Enterprises. He kisses Nola goodbye and he and Bea leave. Nola is about to leave to go to Maureen's when she remembers to ask Tony about the film in Tom Reardon's camera. Tony tells her that his friend is trying to develop the film despite the age, and Nola tells him that she wants to see the pictures if they come out.

Quint is visiting Henry at Spaulding, and Henry starts talking about everything that's involved in planning the wedding. Quint tells Henry that he doesn't want to marry Nola under the name "McCord", that the name doesn't mean anything to him, and he'd like to use the name "Chamberlain" unless Henry has any objections. Henry gets up from his desk and turns away from Quint, who comes to stand behind him and asks if he's all right. Henry is in tears as he says that he's fine, he's just very happy. Henry then calls Vanessa and asks her to come to his office, since Quinton has just given him some wonderful news. He then asks Quint if he would like to take a permanent position at Spaulding, but Quint says that he wants to think it over. When Vanessa arrives, Henry tells her that Quint and Nola have chosen a date for the wedding. True to form, Vanessa cannot resist the opportunity to take a dig a Nola with her comment that she's sure they chose June since it's the most "common" month for weddings, and so of course that's the one Nola would choose. From the look on Quint's face, it's obvious that he got her meaning and doesn't like it. Henry then tells her that Quint is no longer going to use the name "McCord" and Vanessa asks if he's made up another name. Henry then announces that Quint is going to take the Chamberlain name, that they are now going to be the Chamberlain family. Vanessa pretends that she is just thrilled about this "wonderful news" and starts to leave, when Henry adds that he has also asked Quint to work with him at Spaulding, but Quint hasn't made a decision about that yet. After Quint leaves, Vanessa throws a tantrum about how Henry has shoved her aside in favor of Quinton.

Nola walks into Tony and Co. to find Tony holding the picture from Tom Reardon's camera. He tells her that it's a picture from the fishing trip that Tom used to organize each year. When Nola asks about the woman in the picture, Tony announces that that woman is the reason Tom left them. Nola cannot believe that Tom left them for another woman, and she and Tony argue about it, neither one convincing the other.

The episode opens with Quint, Nola, Vanessa and Henry at Mike Bauer's office. Mike is saying that he'll file the necessary papers and Quint's name change will be taken care of within a few weeks. Nola suggests that they leave for the country club and Quint agrees, because they don't want Bea to have to wait for them, giving Vanessa the chance to make a catty remark about Bea not being a member. Henry tells Vanessa to go to the country club with Quint and Nola, because he has something that he wants to discuss with Mike in private. As soon as they leave, Henry tells Mike that he wants to change his will right away. Henry tells Mike that he wants to make plans for any grandchildren that he may have. He asks Mike to triple the amount of money in the trust that he had set up for Stacey several months earlier, and use that as a prototype for any children that Quint or Vanessa may have. He also asks Mike to make provisions for Quinton in his will. The next scene finds Bea, Henry, Nola, Quint and Vanessa at the country club. When Henry asks for a menu, the waiter tells him that the menu had been prearranged. Vanessa then announces that she had arranged the menu with the chef that afternoon - "all Daddy's favorites, I know them so well" - then tries to embarrass Bea by asking her if she thinks a particular wine will complement a particular entree, using the French name for the entree. Quinton makes a toast to the future Nola Reardon Chamberlain and Henry asks if he can drink to that. Quint says that he intends to announce his change of name at the same time that he and Nola formally announce their engagement. Bea suggests that she and Henry host a party for them, but Vanessa informs her that she has already spoken to the manager of the club about throwing an engagement party for them. Vanessa goes on to suggest that it be a costume ball, modeled on a specific period in history, and says that Nola can choose the historical era "if she can think of one". Nola says "How about the Civil War?" and Vanessa laughs and says "very appropriate", but then asks how they would feel about the antebellum period instead. After everyone agrees to that, Henry drops his latest bombshell - he's considering buying a house for all of them, because he thinks it would be "dandy" to have all the Chamberlains under one roof.
Quint walks in the front door at Thornway Road. Just then Nola runs down the stairs, comes up to him and they kiss hello. She asks him where he's been all afternoon and he says that he's been planning a surprise. At first he refuses to tell her anything because it wouldn't be a surprise, but then he gives in and tells her that they're going to have a party at the boarding house. He thinks they deserve a party after the past few days, and he wants to celebrate their engagement. Quint warns her that it's not going to be anything fancy, just a little dinner party at the boarding house. Nola asks when Bea wants them at the boarding house, Quint tells her 6 o'clock, she looks at his watch and then races upstairs saying that she doesn't know what she's going to wear. Quint laughs and shakes his head in amusement. A little later we see Quint sitting on the couch in the study looking at a book, as Nola sashays into the study, turns around in front of Quint like a model on a runway. and finally says "Well, what do you think?'" in order to get his attention. Quint looks up, closes his book, and says "Absolutely lovely." Nola tells him that she wanted to look nice since it's their engagement party, and Quint answers (in a slightly seductive tone) "Wonderful choice." He adds that, if he hadn't already asked her to marry him, he'd ask her right now, then kisses her. Nola says that it'll be nice to be with the family and Quint responds that they're the only family he's ever had and he likes them a great deal. Nola jokingly answers that she realized that the night of the card party when he took everyone to the cleaners. She accuses him of being a real card shark and he replies that he likes a game of chance every once in a while, then leans down and kisses her cheek. Nola tells him that she thought she was really getting to know him, then he surprised her all over again. She wonders if she's ever going to get to know him completely, and he answers that he hopes not - he doesn't want them to spend the rest of their lives together and have everything be totally predictable. Nola says that she doesn't think that will happen with them and Quint agrees that, where she's concerned, it never will. Nola laughs, then says that it might be nice, without giving up the archaeology, for them to settle down for "a little minute, just you and me and..." and Quint chimes in "Stacey makes three." Nola responds "Right. For a start." She laughs, as Quint looks a little stunned and says "For a start? Wait a minute, one thing at a time." He reminds her that they haven't even planned the wedding yet and that he still has to get her an engagement ring. She tells him that she already has the best - his mother's ring. He says that he thought she would want something a little more contemporary, but Nola says "Now tell me, why would a girl who grew up thinking she was Bette Davis want something contemporary?" Quint finds it hard to believe that Nola would prefer his mother's ring, but she reassures him. Quint is sitting on the edge of the desk and Nola walks up to him and starts playing with his ascot, adding that if he wanted to give her "a lot of diamonds" for their first anniversary, she certainly wouldn't stop him. Quint laughs, tells her it will be a date, then lifts her left hand to his lips and kisses it. She tells Quint that they need to get going, and asks him if he invited his family to the party. He says that he did, and rather apologetically tells her that he had to invite Vanessa. Nola says that she doesn't mind, that she and Vanessa will have to get to like each other. Quint says that she can give it a try, but not to put herself out for his sake. When Nola realizes what the time is, she insists that they leave, because the one thing she learned growing up in a boarding house is that if you're late for a meal, you don't get any food. The scene shifts to the outside of the boarding house, where Henry and Vanessa have just arrived. Vanessa is complaining about Henry rushing her out of her apartment and says that being on time is rude, but Henry responds that it wasn't rude when he was growing up. When Vanessa grumbles that it's absurd to announce an engagement at a boarding house, Henry points out that this is also Bea and Nola's home. He begs Vanessa not to be snobbish and to try to be on her best behavior, because the evening means a great deal to him and Quinton. Just then Bea opens the door and welcomes Henry and Vanessa, telling them that it wouldn't be a party without them. We next see everyone in the boarding house kitchen, where Tony is opening champagne. Tony and Henry make toasts to Quint and Nola, and Bea makes a toast welcoming Quint to the family. Quint then responds by making a toast to his new family. When Henry asks Vanessa if she doesn't want to make a toast, she gets a rather sickly look on her face but finally manages to say "To Nola and Quinton, salute." Vanessa is obviously bored out of her mind and drinks champagne steadily all evening. When the conversation turns to possible wedding dates, Vanessa takes the opportunity to take a little dig at Nola, by commenting that "it takes time to make a proper wedding, but then, well, since this isn't your first perhaps you'll forgo some of the trappings." Nola answers that she's never been married before and Henry tries to cover Vanessa's rudeness by saying that Quint and Nola's wedding will be the social event of the season. Vanessa's claws are still out, however, wondering if Quint is going to get her something exotic, like the Hope Diamond, as an engagement ring. Nola promptly takes the wind out of Vanessa's sails by saying that her engagement ring is the one that Henry gave to Quint's mother. Quint adds the finishing touch by taking the ring off Nola's finger, saying that when he first gave her the ring it was a testimony to his love, friendship and trust, but when he puts it back on her finger now, "it'll be forever, as a promise of my eternal love and a prayer that we'll have the happiness that was denied to my parents, a thousandfold." He slips the ring on her finger and they kiss, as Henry wipes away a tear. The look on Vanessa's face should make Quint and Nola glad that looks cannot actually kill. The next scene starts with everyone singing "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" (we can see that even Vanessa sings a word or two). Bea starts telling stories about Nola's childhood, Nola protests, Quint urges Bea to continue with the stories, and the party turns into one of noisy, raucous fun.
Bea asks Nola why she thinks Quint would be with Rebecca and Nola answers that she suggested that he go to see Rebecca that evening before he picked her up. Bea is very surprised by this, but Nola explains that she and Quint are very concerned about Rebecca, that she thinks there's something seriously wrong with her, and that she and Quint are going to try to persuade Rebecca to get some help. Just then there is a knock on the door between the kitchen and Company. Tony opens the door to find Ross Marler, who is looking for Quint. Tony says that Quint is a couple of hours late and asks what Ross wants with him.. Ross replies that he had already been to Thornway Road, where he found the note from Rebecca to Quinton. Maureen asks Ross why he's so worried and he responds that Rebecca Cartwright is a very dangerous woman. The scene cuts to the cliff for a replay of the ending of Friday's show, only this time, instead of the screen going black, we see Mark lunging toward Rebecca and Amanda, Rebecca's gun going off and hitting Mark and Mark falling over the cliff as Amanda screams. Rebecca/Mona tells Amanda to stop crying over Mark because he's dead now, and Quint says they have to get help. Rebecca responds that she's calling the shots, and insists that Sam's (Mark's) death is not enough, that no one call understand what he did to her. Quint keeps trying to talk some sense into Mona, but she is beyond reasoning with, talking about Peter (the child she lost when Sam/Mark pushed her off the cliff 3 years earlier) and how he won't rest until Mark and Amanda are dead. Finally, Quint tries a different ploy, asking Mona to let him kill Amanda for her. The scene switches back to the boarding house, where Nola is reading Rebecca's letter to Quint. She figures out that Rebecca has lured Quint to the cliff near the scene of Quint and Rebecca's accident a few months earlier, and she and Ross head to that location. Back at the cliff, Mona agrees to let Quint kill Amanda. Quint leads Amanda away from the edge of the cliff, then asks Mona to give him the gun. She realizes that he doesn't intend to kill Amanda, and starts talking about how their son needs revenge. Quint tries to explain to her that their son was never born, but she insists that he lives, that he exists - she tells Quint that their son is screaming and asks Quint to make him stop. Quint keeps talking to her in soothing tones and finally persuades her to give him the gun, but, just as she is about to take his hand and move away from the edge of the cliff, she turns away from him and jumps off instead. Quint pulls himself together and goes to comfort Amanda. He leads her off the cliff, as Ross and Nola arrive on the scene. Ross shines his flashlight and sees two bodies lying at the foot of the cliff, but can't tell who they are. Just then Nola sees Quint and he tells her that Rebecca is dead, and that he prays that she has found peace at last. Back at the boarding house, they get a phone call from the police station to let them know that Quint and Nola are okay, but that Mark and Rebecca are dead and that Quint and Nola have to go to the police station. Back at the scene, Larry Wyatt tells Quint that he'll be waiting for him and Amanda at the station. Quint responds that he'll be there in a little while, but he wants to talk to Nola first. Quint tells Nola that he's so glad that she's there and adds that he didn't realize that Rebecca was so sick. Nola replies that he must realize that he didn't push her off the cliff in Switzerland and Quint tells her that it was Mark Evans. He goes on to say that he wanted that night "to be the most beautiful night in the world for you, for us", but Nola says that he did what he had to do, the past is over with and finished. When she suggests that they go, he asks her to wait, saying that he wants to stand there for awhile and hold her. They hug and she asks him if he's alright, to which he answers that he'll be fine in a minute. She lays her head on his shoulder and says "I love you, Quinton" and he responds "I love you". In the next scene, Nola is sitting on a large rock and Quint is standing. Nola asks what he's thinking about and he answers "you, me, us", then out of the blue says "Nola, will you marry me?" Nola is caught completely off guard, looks up at him and asks "what?" Quint goes down on one knee and again asks if she will marry him and this time she answers "of course I will" as Pachelbel starts to play in the background. Quint tells her that he knows it's not the right place or time, but that it's never been clearer to him how much he loves her and how much he wants to marry her, and to marry her as fast as he can. He tells her that in his entire life he's never wanted or needed anyone or anything as much as he needs her. With tears in her eyes, Nola responds that no one has ever said that to her before. They kiss and then embrace as the screen fades to black. [The entire proposal scene can be found in the 1983B section of Retro Quola transcriptions.]

Bea, Tony, Maureen and Floyd are in the boarding house kitchen the morning after the incident at the cliff. Quint and Nola are still at the police station, and Floyd is reading a newspaper article about what happened. Maureen says that she's sure Nola will be exhausted after everything that's happened, so it wouldn't be a good idea to hit her with a lot of questions. Just then, Nola and Quint walk into the kitchen. When Bea asks why they were so long, Quint explains that Amanda wasn't in any condition to answer police questions, so he had to be pretty detailed. Nola picks up Stacey and tells her how much she loves her and how much she missed her the night before. Maureen comments that it's so awful for Nola to have had to go through this, especially after what she went through in Tanquir. As Quint walks across the kitchen to stand by Nola and Stacey, he tells them that, difficult as it may be for them to believe, something good did come out of the night before. When Tony asks what it was, Quint says "Well, I asked Nola to marry me." As the four of them stare in astonishment, Nola adds "And, I said yes." She and Quint are both wearing big grins. Bea gives Quint a big hug and says that she's so happy for them. Maureen and Tony both kiss Nola, and Tony shakes Quint's hand and congratulates him. Maureen also tells Quinton how happy she is for them. Quint answers "I'm glad you're all happy." He then apologizes to Bea for having put Nola in dangerous situations, but promises that from now on he's going to take good care of her "little girl". Tony says "You do that" and Quint answers "I will". Bea says that he's going to have to stop scaring them and he promises that he will. Tony says that this makes them brothers, and Quint replies that he couldn't have asked for a better brother. Tony asks Quint to take care of her and Quint says that he will. Then Maureen tells Quint, in a teasing voice, that she thinks he's the perfect guy for their Nola, and that she didn't think they'd ever find her a man. Nola kind of smacks Maureen on the shoulder as Maureen goes on to talk about getting Nola dressed up as a bride. Bea asks when the wedding is going to be, and Nola answers that she hasn't thought about that but does know that she wants Maureen to be her matron of honor. Floyd offers his congratulations and Quint asks him to call him by his first name from now on. Quinton then says that they need to leave, since Henry is waiting at his house with Mrs. Renfield, and he and Nola are kind of tired. As they are about to leave, Quint says that he really likes his new family and they all say that they like him too. The scene shifts to the study at Thornway Road, where Vanessa, Henry and Mrs. Renfield are waiting for Quint and Nola to come downstairs after changing out of their evening clothes. Vanessa is making acerbic comments about Quinton spending a considerable amount of time on the front page, and Henry tells her not to make jokes about her brother. Henry is just saying that perhaps he and Vanessa should come back later, after Quint and Nola have gotten some rest, when the two of them walk into the room. Vanessa immediately demands that Quint tell them exactly what happened, but Henry says that he doesn't have to tell them anything since Mrs. Renfield has already explained who Rebecca was. Mrs. Renfield says that all that matters now is that Quinton is safe. Henry tells Quint and Nola that Mrs. Renfield stayed up all night waiting for word on what was happening to them. Vanessa complains that no one told her anything, that she had to read about it in the papers. She is particularly upset that Quinton did not tell her that Rebecca was really Mona Enright, since she and Mona were friends. Quint answers that he did what he thought was best, and that he didn't realize how sick Rebecca was. Henry asks Vanessa to stop talking about Rebecca and just be grateful that she's finally at peace. Mrs. Renfield urges Quint and Nola to get some rest, but Nola pokes Quint's arm and he says that he and Nola have something to tell them since they're all together. Vanessa says that she thinks she senses and announcement and Quint answers that she's right - he and Nola have decided to get married. Henry is thrilled and congratulates them both. Vanessa is being her snotty, sarcastic self and asks Quint if he proposed in the interrogation room at police headquarters, but Henry says that it doesn't matter where he proposed, all that matters is that they're going to be married. Henry tells Quint that he couldn't have found himself a "dandier girl" and Quint agrees. Mrs. Renfield tells Quinton that this is what she's been praying for - that he would find happiness with a woman that truly loves him. She then tells Nola that Nola has made her very happy, and Nola hugs her. Vanessa says that she's thrilled for both of them, and Nola answers that now there's nothing to stand in the way of their happiness. Vanessa then asks Quint why he decided to propose the night before, adding that she "wouldn't have supposed that the sight of two corpses would have put you in a romantic frame of mind". Quint responds that the evening's events made him see things more clearly and he realized that, without Nola, he wouldn't have anything for the rest of his life. Vanessa suggests to Henry that they give Quint and Nola the biggest party that Springfield's ever seen, but Quint says that they have to check with Bea first. Henry asks if Bea knows about the engagement yet, and Nola answers that they told her that morning and that Nola has never seen her so happy. Vanessa say, in a catty tone, "I'll bet she is." Mrs. Renfield then urges them both to go upstairs and get some rest and suggests that she go upstairs with them to see if there's anything that they need. Quint says he can't think of anything better than being escorted upstairs by the two most important women in his life, and the three of them leave the room. As soon as they're gone, Vanessa starts talking about how tasteless it is for them to announce their engagement right after Mona's death, but Henry responds that they're in love and that's what matters. They talk about Rebecca/Mona for a few minutes, then Vanessa asks Henry if he's really happy about Quint and Nola's marriage. Henry rather indignantly asks how she can even ask such a question, since Quint and Nola love each other and belong together. Vanessa tries to backtrack, and says that she meant that she thought he must be terribly hurt because they told Bea about the engagement, but didn't even call him. Henry sits down on the couch beside Vanessa and says " Vanessa, I am going to say something to you, and I hope I shall never have to say it again." Vanessa asks if it can wait and Henry answers that it can't. He goes on to say "Now, you know I love you, but if you do anything to come between Quinton and Nola, and I mean that, anything, I'll change my will. I'll disinherit you. Now, is that clear?" Vanessa responds that it's very clear. A little later, we see Quint sitting on the sofa in the study, lost in thought, when Nola walks in. Quint comments that apparently she couldn't sleep either and she answers that she couldn't. She asks if she can sit down, or if he'd prefer to be alone, and he reaches out and pulls her down on the couch beside him. He puts his arms around her as she rests her head on his shoulder and he says "Do you realize that you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives together?" Nola asks if that scares him and he answers "Absolutely not. No sir. It just makes me realize how lucky I am." Nola lifts her head to look at Quint, says "That's right. Don't forget it" and they both laugh, then kiss and hug each other.
