SCENE 21, INTERIOR OF SUITE, PLAZA HOTEL, NEAR DAWN THE NEXT DAY.

Quint lies facedown asleep in the middle of the bed. Nola is across the room gazing out the window as the first light of dawn slowly seeps across the skyline. She is hugging her silk robe closed with one hand, and runs her other hand through her hair and looks a bit upset. She glances over at Quint and smiles slightly nervously and then gazes out the window again.

N: (whispering) Oh my...what have I done? I love him so much...God, I wish Maureen were here.

Nola sighs and contemplates the slowly wakening city below. Quint gradually awakens but doesn't stir, only opening one eye, he spies Nola at the window. Before he can go to her, he realizes something is amiss and is confused and starts trying to recall what might have happened to upset her. She sighs again and assumes an almost prayer-like attitude.

N: (still whispering) Well, maybe you can hear me, Mo. I really miss you and I'm still so mad that you're gone. Times like these I really could use my sister to talk with. Well here goes...

Quint decides to keep quiet and listen to see what he can learn.

N: Maureen, I swore I wouldn't do it. I swore I would never let him get to me again. But I did...and I'm so scared. I'm happy too, don't get me wrong. It's weird. I spent all those months trying to block out all the pain I was in. I ran home like a kid with a scraped knee expecting to find Ma there to bandage me up and kiss it and make it all better. I even half expected you to come bouncing through the door telling me to hang in there and things would work out. Only it didn't happen. Mom wasn't there and you...(in tears now) you couldn't come in and make me snap out of it.

She pauses and wipes the tears away and takes a deep breath so she can continue.

N: I know it was stupid...a broken marriage isn't anything like a skinned knee. So there I was, back home, trying to be a grown up and trying to make believe that everything would be o.k. Only it wasn't. The only time it was o.k. was when I didn't let myself think about it. You wouldn't believe what I did to try to forget...to try not to feel anything. I moved back home, into that huge old crowded, place and tried to pretend that it was exactly where I wanted to be. I even threatened to re-decorate it for Bridget. I spent more time doing laundry, working at Tony's bar... Yeah, I know it's Bridget's now, but I'll always think of it as his. Oh God, Mo, you should see what she's done to the place...See, that's exactly what I mean...who cares what she's done to it? I tried so hard to get involved with her and Matt's problems, with anything else, rather than stop and think about my own life. I couldn't think about it. I couldn't let myself feel that pain, or I'd fly apart into a million pieces. So I didn't. Until now...

She pauses to collect her thoughts. Quint carefully and quietly rolls to his side, but keeps his eyes closed until he hears her resume speaking.

N: Oh Maureen, what am I going to do? I didn't stop to think. I let myself get caught up in the idea that one night out, away from all those things I do to keep me busy, to keep me in that deep-freeze of feeling nothing, that one night wouldn't hurt. That I was ready to go out into the world for a few hours. Now look what's happened...the minute I saw Quinton waiting for me, worrying about everything, I was lost Maureen...(smiling now)All I could do was stand there and LOVE him, in spite of everything. I didn't feel the pain anymore, but I did feel...all those things that started so long ago in that gazebo out on Thornway Road...and more too. It's so much more now that we've shared so many years together. Quint and I've spent the last few days off on this big honeymoon adventure. It's truly been fantastic, almost unreal, how wonderful it's been...like living out all my wildest fantasies, being able to go anywhere, and make love night and day, doing so many things we never allowed ourselves to do the first time around.

Quint smiles at that, knowing exactly what she means, and feeling the same.

N: O.K. Maureen, I can just hear you now..."So, Nola, you dope, what's the big problem?"

N: Well, the big problem is, now that I can feel all this wonderful stuff, every once in a while, I get a flash of pain too. Not a big one, not like when it all fell apart, no where near that big, but Maureen, it's big enough. Big enough to scare the hell out of me. I can't go back to that deep-freeze and shut off everything again.

She swallows with difficulty, and squeezes her eyes shut, trying not to cry again. A look of pain crosses Quint's face as well. He quietly sits up halfway and begins to go to her, but her next words stop him.

N: (slowly, her voice shaking) So, Maureen what do I do with that? I woke up in the middle of the night and reality hit me and all at once I got so scared...I tried to imagine what would happen if this feeling between us doesn't last. What if someday it all falls apart again? I'd never be able to survive it...Oh God, I love him so much...

Nola begins to cry softly and shiver from standing in the pre-dawn chill. Quint, no longer able to stand the pretense, grabs the blankets from the bed and quietly goes to her. He wraps her tenderly, and gathers her up, carrying her to the large, overstuffed chair across the room. Nola looks at him questioningly, tears still in her eyes, wondering how much he had heard. As Quint settles them into the chair, he begins to gently wipe away her tears with his fingertips, hushing her, and slowly rocking her in his arms. As her tears subside, he closes his eyes and kisses her sweetly and gently, then holds her to his chest and kisses the top of her head.

Q: (very quietly) Nola, my dearest, sweetest Nola. I love you, too. I love you more than life itself. I wish with all my heart that I could take that pain from you. I would give anything to turn back the clock...to give you back your faith and trust in me. The hardest thing I've ever had to do was look in your eyes and see that pain...and know that I could have prevented it...I have no excuse...I can only beg you to forgive me...and hope that someday you will be able to...to forget.

N: Oh, Quint. I have forgiven you, I told you that. I just get so scared sometimes. We can't hide out forever. I don't know what will happen. Can we hold this together out in the real world?

Q: We must, my love, because if we don't, you won't be the only one to fly apart into a million pieces...I'll never survive either. I can't live without you. I tried for so long to deny it. To tell myself that I didn't need you...but it wasn't true. I was dead inside. I only came alive, slowly, bit by bit, as I set about trying to get you back.

Quint raises her chin gently but firmly, with one finger, and looks directly into her eyes.

Q: (determined) Now that you're here and I have you back I'll be damned if you're ever getting away from me again. And if I can't take away the pain of the past completely, I want to hear about it. From you. Directly. You wake me if I'm asleep, you call me if you're not with me, you scream at me if I'm wrapped up in my work, but you TELL me. Agreed?

N: (nodding) Yes, sir.

Q: The only way I can take away your fears, Nola, is if I know when you're afraid. I can take you away on the longest, most romantic trip and hide you away forever, but you could still be afraid. But if you tell me your fears, I promise, the world as we know it will stop, and I'll hold you like this for as long as it takes, and it will just be the two of us, no matter where we are. We can work through this, and through anything else that comes along, as long as we communicate.

Nola sighs and snuggles closer as Quint continues to rock her. Slowly her shivering stops and her body warms and relaxes against him. Quint looks down and sees that she's fallen asleep. He carefully rises and carries her back to bed, where he soon joins her in peaceful slumber.

SCENE 22, STREETS OF MANHATTAN, MID-AFTERNOON

Nola, wearing a chic, deep green wool pant suit, covered by a cream-colored wool coat, jostles her way through the crowd on the sidewalk, holding on to Quint. Quint is also wearing his new finery, loafers, dark, surprisingly casual pants and a heavy, cable knit Irish pullover sweater with wooden buttons at the collar, the top two undone. He is wearing his same top coat, with Nola's red scarf still draped around the neck. He carries several shopping bags in his free hand. The two appear totally happy and give no sign of the earlier worry.

Q: Where to now Nola?

N: Where's the car?

Q: (pointing to it) Right over there.

They arrive near the car shortly and the driver begins to stow the packages for them.

Q: Well, Nola? Where to?

N: The only one I have left on my list, besides you, is Peter. How about FAO Schwartz?

Q: For me, or for Peter?

N: (laughing) I'll never tell.

The driver helps them into the back seat and they are on their way.

SCENE 23, INTERIOR OF FAO SCHWARTZ

Quint and Nola explore the crowded store with joyful abandon. Like a couple of kids themselves, each pauses to play with an attractive toy every few steps. They end up in an aisle filled with trucks and action figures.

N: Quint, help me decide. What would Peter like best?

Q: Why decide? Let's just get him one everything.

N: Bridget would love that...Santa's supposed to come through for him, not Aunt Nola and Uncle Quint.

Q: Oh, I guess you're right.

Quint examines the trucks before them and bends to pick one up to show Nola.

Q: I imagine this would be my personal favorite.

He picks up a big realistic looking Tonka fire truck, complete with Dalmation riding on the rear bumper. He pushes a button and the siren sounds and lights flash, another and the horn blares.

N: (laughing) Quint, why is that your favorite?

Q: Oh, all little boys want to be firemen around Peter's age. And this one is so realistic.

N: Yes, I guess it is.

She pushes the siren button herself.

Q: It only lacks one thing.

N: What's that?

Q: A tiny little Aunt Nola doll, all dressed up in her wedding dress.

N: (laughing) Oh, Quint.

Q: Nola, this brings back some very lovely memories. Right after I exploded at Tony for forgetting to bring you to your own wedding, I heard all these sirens, and figured the only other thing that could go wrong was that St. Anthony's had caught fire as well. Little did I know it was my lovely and ingenious bride, hurrying to our wedding.

He bends to kiss her, and the truck's horn blares again. Several little shoppers and their parents turn to admire them. One little boy makes a face.

Boy: Eeew, yuck. Girls have cooties!

Quint breaks the kiss and laughs. He turns to address the boy.

Q: Someday, young man, girls will no longer have "cooties," I promise you. And when you realize how wonderful and special they are, I hope you find one as beautiful and warm and funny and smart and sexy as I did. And if you do, hang on to her, as hard as you can, and never let her get away.

The boy, still unconvinced, makes another face. His mother, however, is enthralled and smiles at Quint, then looks at Nola with just a tinge of envy. Nola kisses Quint's cheek and grabs the truck from him.

N: A fire truck it is. But no Nola doll.

Q: Oh well, I'll just have to tuck him in bed one night and tell him that story. He'll love it.

N: I'm sure he'll be impressed that his Aunt Nola got to ride on a real fire truck. Do you suppose I'll get more respect the next time I try and make him eat his vegetables?

Q: Absolutey my dear.

They turn to go arm-in-arm, with their memories surrounding them, and the toy truck tucked beneath Quint's arm.

To be continued....

SCENE 24, EXTERIOR OF FAO SCHWARTZ, MINUTES LATER

Quint and Nola emerge from the doorway, kissing and laughing. Quint leaves Nola looking at the display window and hands the large, brightly gift-wrapped package to the limo driver and speaks to him for a moment.

Q: (quietly) Ah, if you would, please deliver our packages to the concierge there at the Plaza. And take a little break. We've another appointment just down the street here. If you could pick us up again in about an hour or so. We'll be at...

Nola peeks at him curiously from the corner of her eye and tries her best to make out what he's saying.

N: What did you tell him?

Q: Just that we'd like to take a little stroll for a bit and he's to meet us in an hour or so.

N: A stroll, Quint? Aren't your feet tired from all the walking we've already done in the stores? Mine are.

Q: Oh, yes. They are a bit. But we won't be going too far. And it's such a lovely brisk day. Come on, I promise you'll enjoy the sights.

N: O.K., but not too far. An hour? Where are we going?

Q: It's a surprise. Follow me, my love. I promise I'll carry you if you get too tired before we get there.

Nola giggles at the image of Quint carrying her through the crowded sidewalks, and then pauses with curiosity when she remembers he mentioned a surprise. Quint reaches back to bring her along with him.

N: Oh come on Quinton, tell me. Where are we going?

Q: Now, Nola it wouldn't be a surprise if I told you, would it?

N: Please? Pretty please? I'll...

She reaches up and whispers in his ear. He stops dead in his tracks and listens. The crowds on the sidewalk flow past them for a time. He closes his eyes as she finishes and then he turns and gives her his best crooked smile.

Q: My, my, you really don't play fair at all, do you?

N: Will it work?

Q: Not this time my dear. But I'll tell you a secret.

N: Damn! Why not?...What secret?

Q: If you'd tried that before our wedding, there is no way on God's green earth I'd ever have been able to keep our honeymoon destination from you.

N: Really?

Q: Of course, that definitely would have worked. At the most crucial moment I just know I'd have screamed "Ireland, Nola, Ireland" at the top of my lungs.

N: (laughing hysterically) Oh, Quint...(more laughter)if I'd only known. I'd have gotten over being so shy long ago.

They resume walking, both laughing at the vivid picture painted in their minds. They come to the corner and Quint guides Nola over to wait for the light to change so they can cross the street.

Q: Yes, well, now that you do know, I fear no secret is safe again. I must be ever more vigilant and never let you know I'm even planning to surprise you in the future.

N: But I know now and you said it wouldn't work this time.

They cross and Quint turns them back up the street in the direction they'd walked on the other side.

Q: That's because we've arrived at our destination.

N: Already?

She looks at the elegant store front before them. A discreet sign reads Harry Winston, Fine Jeweler. Before realization has fully dawned on her, Quint ushers her inside the elegant, hushed atmosphere.

Nola takes in her surroundings in wonder while Quint speaks quietly to the sales person that greets them.

Sales Person: (shaking their hands) Yes, Mr. Chamberlain, Mrs Chamberlain so good to meet you both. We've been expecting you. I'm Mr. Morton. Come right this way.

He leads them to another, smaller, yet equally elegant room and seats them before an antique desk.

Mr. Morton: Now, Mr. Chamberlain, I've gathered a sample that I think represents the type of piece you mentioned on the phone. And I think you'll find that we've matched the style of the piece you sent me quite well. Let me speak to my assistant and we can begin.

Nola sits speechless for a moment, unable to quite come to grips with her present situation.

N: (whispering) Quint! What's going on? What are we doing here?

Q: (deadpan) Christmas shopping, Nola.

N: Yes, but...

Q: (grinning broadly now) I thought about picking this out without your assistance, but I really didn't want to do this without you. It's quite a place isn't it? I thought you might enjoy visiting with me, helping me decide.

N: Decide what?

Q: You'll see.

N: Quinton!

Just then the door opens and the Mr. Morton and his assistant enter carrying several velvet covered boxes of varying sizes. One of the boxes on top is smaller and looks vaguely familiar to Nola.

Mr Morton: Here we are. Yes, thank you Arthur. I'll call if we require any other samples.

Arthur exits quietly as Mr Morton seats himself behind the desk and begins arranging the boxes before him. Nola is still eyeing the small box, searching her memory. Mr. Morton reaches for that box first and begins to open it. Nola peers at the contents and gasps.

N: My engagement ring!

She turns to look at Quint in amazement.

N: How did that get here? I had it hidden in my dresser drawer at the boarding house under my...

Q: (laughing) Yes, I know where it was. J was rather descriptive of what he found in that drawer before he located the ring.

N: J? When did he...How did you get him to?

Q: Oh Nola, J's motivations are quite clear cut as you well know. He visited your room two days ago at my request. I believe he mentioned a trip to Cancun with his friends over spring break when we discussed what assistance I would require. That seemed to be quite a reasonable price to pay, seeing that I was quite unable to accomplish the task myself.

N: But...

Q: Now Nola, we're not here to play twenty questions. I think you mentioned that you didn't want to play that game last night. Let's get this ring back where it belongs.

He takes the ring from the box and slides it gently onto her finger. He then kisses the back of her hand and turns her hand over slowly and kisses the inside of her wrist. He looks up into her eyes as he places the last kiss and they gaze at one another for a long moment. Mr. Morton discreetly averts his eyes and he and the rest of the world disappear for them both as they contemplate the ring and the re-commitment they've made to one another that it symbolizes. Nola touches Quints cheek with her palm and feels the weight of his hand covering hers as Quint mouths "I love you" to her silently. A few tears well up in Nola's eyes as he leans to kiss her lips sweetly, a groom bestowing a ceremonial kiss upon his bride. Nola sighs softly as the kiss ends and whispers "I love you too" against his lips.

Gradually, their awareness of their surroundings returns them to the task at hand.

Q: (clearing his throat) Ah, yes...Mr. Morton...my apologies.

Mr. Morton: No apologies are necessary Mr. Chamberlain. Jewelry can serve no higher purpose than to be more than merely decorative as is obviously the case with your wife's exquisite emerald ring.

Q: Yes, well thank you for your patience, in any case. May we see what you've brought?

Mr. Morton: Of course. Mrs. Chamberlain, not knowing your preferences, I've brought a sampling for you to peruse.

He begins opening several of the boxes. Nola gazes in astonishment at the array of necklaces, bracelets, and earrings displayed before her. Each one glitters more alluringly than the next.

N: Oh my! Quint?

Q: Yes love?

Nola is speechless and can't respond.

Mr. Morton: Perhaps we should try these on you so you can get a better idea of how they will look.

Nola simply nods in agreement and allows Quint to place the first necklace about her neck while Mr. Morton lifts a lovely silver framed mirror from behind the desk and stands it next to her so she can admire the view. Moments later, Quint switches to the next necklace and then adds a pair of earrings. Nola tries each one on, one by one, without expressing a preference, just exclaimng softly to herself each time she sees the effect wrought upon her in the mirror.

Q: Well Nola? Does anything strike your fancy?

N: Oh Quint, they are all so beautiful. But this is really too much. I don't need this...it's...

Q: Now, Nola, I'll have none of that. I want to give you this. You can't refuse me. It's Christmas, Nola. Well, nearly so. You must allow me this.

N: If you're sure.

Q: Quite positive. Now which is your favorite?

N: I can't decide.

She eyes the wealth of gems before her. Her eyes come to rest upon an emerald necklace in an intricate gold setting.

Mr. Morton: Excellent choice, Mrs. Chamberlain. In fact, this piece and the earrings here (he indicates the box beside the necklace) are my personal favorites. They date from the same period as your ring. The workmanship and styling are quite similar to each other and to your piece as well. Quality gems and settings such as these are simply not available in modern pieces.

Q: (examining the contents of both boxes) Yes, I quite agree. These are the quite the best of the lot.

He places the necklace about Nola's neck and it shimmers against the deeper green of her suit jacket and the cream colored lace and embroidery of the antique blouse that peeks from the V of her jacket. She gently touches the stones and feels the weight about her neck.

N: Oh, Quinton, are you sure?

Q: Of course I am Nola. Merry Christmas, my dearest.

He starts to reach for the earrings, but Nola stops him, already overwhelmed by the vast sum he's about to spend on the necklace.

Q: Nola, please...

N: No, Quinton. This is already too much, but I can tell you're determined. Please, just the necklace.

Q: All right, Nola. If you insist.

Quint removes the necklace and returns it to its box and he and Mr. Morton depart to discuss the logistics of their transaction. Nola sits quietly and contemplates the third finger of her left hand, recovering from the excitement. Quint returns and helps Nola into her coat. Mr. Morton sees them to the door.

Mr. Morton: Good-by Mr. Chamberlain. I'll handle everything as we discussed.

Q: (shaking his hand) Mr. Morton. Thank you for your assistance.

Mr. Morton: It was my pleasure. As was meeting you, Mrs. Chamberlain.

N: Thank you, Mr. Morton. Good-by.

Quint and Nola depart the store and are assaulted by the contrasting noise and rush of the holiday crowds still flowing past on the sidewalk. Nola seems to snap out of the trance she's been in for the past hour.

N: (excitedly) Oh my God! Quint, did we just do that? I didn't dream that up did I?

Q: No, Nola, it wasn't a dream. Your gift will be delivered to the hotel by courier later today. It should arrive back there by the time we do.

N: I can't believe it. Thank you, Quint!

She kisses him deeply for a long moment, as the crowds continue to rush past. At last the kiss breaks and Quint squeezes her to him then guides her a few feet away and over to the curb where the car is waiting. They slide into the back seat and the driver shuts the door behind them.

Q: Where to now, Nola?

N: Oh, it's getting dark. Maybe we could drive over to Rockefeller center and look at the tree.

Q: That sounds festive.

He instructs the driver of their destination and settles back with Nola to enjoy the ride.

N: Quinton?

Q: Yes, Nola?

N: Oh, I love the way you say that! Say it again.

Q: (slightly slower) Yes, Nola?

N: What happens after you've made all my dreams come true?

Q: I don't know, Nola. I rather doubt that someone with the intelligence and imagination that you possess will ever run out of dreams to chase.

N: I can't think of a single thing at the moment.

Q: Ah, well, my dear. Come here.

He pulls her to him and she rests her head on his chest.

Q: Now close your eyes for a moment and surely something will occur to you.

They snuggle up to each other and wait for inspiration.

After a time the car slows as they near Rockefeller Center. As it stops, Quint kisses the top of Nola's head and the driver comes around to open the door. Nola steps out, followed by Quint. She takes in the sight of the huge, bedecked tree, and the ice skaters sliding past it. Quint starts to walk toward the rink but she stops him.

Q: Wouldn't you like a closer view?

N: No, I don't think so.

Q: Oh?

N: No, Quint, I think something occurred to me just now in the car.

Q: Another dream to chase?

N: Yes, but we don't really have to go very far to chase it.

Q: Well, by all means, let's get started.

He helps her back into the limo and the driver settles back in and awaits his instruction.

Q: Well, Nola where are we headed now?

N: It doesn't matter.

Q: What? What shall I tell the driver?

N: Just tell him we'd like to see more of the city lights and to drive us around for a while. It doesn't matter where.

Q: All right.

Quint passes her instructions along and settles back, awaiting her explanation. The car pulls out into traffice and Nola remains silent.

Q: O.K., Nola, what occurred to you? What did you dream up this time?

N: Let me show you.

Nola proceeds to remove her overcoat and then the jacket of her suit and tosses them aside onto the other seat.

N: Getting any ideas?

Q: Nola, that blouse it a little revealing isn't it?

N: Only for you, dear...this is a private showing.

Q: Ah, in that case, might I see more?

N: Of course, as much as you like.

Q: Oh well I think I'd like to get the full picture, my dear. If you would be so kind.

N: My pleasure.

To be continued......

Home for the Holidays 11

SCENE 25, LOBBY OF PLAZA HOTEL, AN HOUR OR SO LATER.

Nola and Quinton stroll in, arm in arm, both wearing expressions of supreme satisfaction. Their clothing and hair are a bit disheveled. Quint sports a bit of lipstick near his right ear.

Concierge: Good evening Mr Chamberlain, Mrs. Chamberlain

N: Good evening.

Q: (looking adoringly at Nola) Good..ah, no, Good does not do it justice...it is a magnificent evening.

He begins kissing Nola's neck, a bit too intimately for the public surroundings in which they stand.

N: (whispering) Quint!

She pokes him gently in the ribs. He decides can wait the few more minutes it will take to get to their room, and straightens to look at the Concierge.

Concierge: Ahem, yes, well, Mr. Chamberlain, a package arrived for you a few minutes ago. I believe it was placed in the hotel safe. Would you like me to retrieve it for you?

Q: Oh yes, thank you.

SCENE 26, INTERIOR OF HOTEL SUITE, MOMENTS LATER

Nola and Quint enter the suite and Nola begins giggling gleefully as she tears open the package. She stops giggling and falls silent as she slides the velvet box gently from the wrapping. Quint takes the box gently from her hands and slowly opens it.

N: (peering inside) Oh...Oh my

Her fingertips gently glide over the stones. Quint watches her face carefully.

N: It's so beautiful. I can't believe it.

Q: Here let me put it on for you.

N: No, wait. I want this to be perfect.

Q: What Nola?

N: I'll be right back. Why don't you order us some dinner?

Q: All right. Hurry back Nola.

Nola exits to the bedroom and soon water is heard running in the shower. Quint goes to the desk and calls room service to order their dinner. While Nola is occupied he takes the opportunity to make another phone call.

Q: Hello...yes it's me. How is everything coming with the preparations?

He listens for a bit.

Q: Fine, that sounds wonderful...Oh really?...You did get confirmation of that?

Another pause.

Q: Yes, well, be sure to do that first thing tomorrow...we've finished our shopping I believe, and I don't think Nola really wants to stay around and sightsee...I'll see what I can do to keep her here as long as possible...I'll call before our plane takes off...that should give you a couple hours notice. Do what you can to finish as much as possible...

Another long pause

Q: Yes, those are the priorities. I must go now. I don't know how much longer Nola will be...very good...until tomorrow, then.

He hangs up and then calls the lobby again, this time to order fresh flowers be sent up to the room. Nola enters just as he is finishing the call. He looks over to watch her enter and stops and stares at her. He tries to hang up the phone, but misses because he can't take his eyes off Nola.

Nola enters wearing a lacy black negligee, reminiscent of one she wore long ago. She walks in slowly and confidently and gently removes the receiver from Quint's hand and hangs it up for him.

N: There's that look again.

Q: Wh..what look?

N: That look you give me that sends me over the edge.

Q: Oh?

N: Yes, Quinton. It used to scare me too. Just a little bit.

Q: And it doesn't scare you anymore?

N: No, that was a long time ago.

Q: I remember...you look more beautiful now than you did then, if that's possible. You were so lovely. You are more than lovely now.

N: I am?

Q: Of course you are...

Just then a knock is heard at the door.

Q: That would be dinner.

Quint opens the door and tips the bell boy generously.

Q: No that's all right. I'll take it from here.

Just then the flowers are delivered as well. Quint stops to sign for them and hand out another tip. He attempts to carry the flowers in one hand and wheel the room service cart with the other.

Bell boy: Are you sure I can't set that up for you sir?

Q: What? Oh...no that's perfectly fine. I can handle it. You see my wife is...

Nola appears at the doorway then and the two hotel employees get quite an eyeful. She calmly removes the flowers from Quint's hand and smiles at them both innocently.

N: Oh Quint these flowers are lovely. Roses are my favorite...next to heather of course.

She closes her eyes and breathes their scent deeply and calmly returns to the room. Both men are then treated to a baleful glare by Quint, and exit promptly, wiping the grins from their faces.

Quint rolls the cart into the room and opens his mouth to tell Nola what he thinks of her little show. Before a single word is uttered, Nola melts against him and delivers a lethal kiss. His indignation dies quickly and painlessly - rather pleasurably, in fact.

Nola continues kissing him and slides her hands up under his sweater to explore a bit, while her mouth slides downward, kissing and nibbling on his neck. Quint closes his eyes and leans his head back. His hands stroke her back and one glides upward and his fingers become buried in her hair.

Q: Oh, Nola...what you do to me is amazing...Ouch!

N: (she stops and looks at him, trying to suppress a grin) Oh I'm sorry, did I bite too hard?

Q: (rubbing his neck a bit) Nola, the food is here...perhaps we should partake of it before we partake of other things.

N: All right.

She steps back and he rolls the cart into the room and sets it up, then dims the light except for one in the corner. Nola places the flowers nearby and Quint comes up behind her quietly.

Q: And now for the finishing touch.

He tenderly places the exquisite necklace about her neck and fastens the clasp. He kisses the back of her neck and turns her to face him.

Q: Ravishing, my dear. It reflects your beauty perfectly.

He slowly and gently places a soft kiss upon her lips and leads her to the table. They eat slowly, feeding one another, and sharing a bottle of champagne that had been located earlier in the mini-bar.

At last, the meal complete Quint silently rises and leads Nola to the bedroom. He sits down on the edge of the bed and slowly unties the bow holding the filmy robe closed. He slides the robe off and it slips to the floor. He grasps the thin straps of her gown between his fingers and glides the gown off as well. Nola stands before him adorned only with the deep green flash of jewels about her neck.

Q: Nola, Nola I love you so much

N: I love you too, Quint. I need you...now and forever.

He pauses a moment to take the sight of her in again and then rises to quickly shed his own clothes. They tumble together onto the bed, devouring each other greedily, unable to slow the inevitable and savor it as they had the meal that preceded it.

SCENE 27, HOTEL SUITE, THE NEXT DAY.

Quint is still in bed sleeping. Nola enters the bedroom, fully dressed, in another of her flattering new outfits. She tiptoes over and places a rose and a note on the pillow next to Quint and quietly exits.

SCENE 28, HOTEL SUITE, SEVERAL HOURS LATER

Quint sits near on the sofa with two untouched lunch trays before him, and a worried expression on his face.

Q: Where is she?

He taps his foot nervously, and runs his hand through his hair.

Q: What if something happened to her...At least she had the good sense not to wear that necklace about...

Finally he hears the door knob rattle and he rises and walks to the door. Nola enters carrying a couple of Saks and Henri Bendel shopping bags and some other boxes that are already gift wrapped. Quint looks at her with relief all over his face and then looks again.

Q: Nola, what took you so long?...What have you done to your hair?

N: Do you like it? I was just going to go pick up your present but then I stopped at a couple more stores and one of the sales ladies suggested that I go to this salon...I'm afraid I had to kind of bribe them to work me in on such short notice...I hope you don't mind?

Q: Nola, you look...

N: Gorgeous? Fantastic? How about sexy?

Q: All of the above...and more.

N: Why thank you, Quinton. I feel that way too. Nothing like being pampered and spending a ton of money...nothing like it at all.

Q: Then we shall have to come visit the Big Apple more often.

N: Ooh, lunch...I'm starved.

They sit down and attack the food.

N: Well, that does it for my shopping. I finally found the perfect present for you.

Q: Oh? When do I get to open it?

N: Not until Christmas Quinton.

Q: Well, Nola, I let you have yours early.

N: I know and I do appreciate that...but this gift is special. I want to give it to you when we're home. I want to really enjoy the holiday this year, do all the traditional things. In fact, when can we leave?

Q: Now Nola Christmas is still a couple of days away. Can't we spend one more night here by ourselves? Let me take you out dancing tonight and we'll leave in the morning.

N: Well, I suppose one more night would be kind of fun. We haven't been dancing in so long.

Q: Thank you, Nola. We'll have great fun and I'll get to show you off one more time before we head home.

N: That tux has gotten more use in the last few days than it has in years. You really should have worn it more often. You're irresistible in it.

Q: Now you tell me. After all these months wracking my brain to try and figure out how to break through to you.

N: You didn't ask, Quint.

Q: No, I guess I didn't. (grinning wickedly) But I know now.

N: My goodness, that sounds almost dangerous.

Q: It is my dear, believe me.

To be continued....

Home for the Holidays 12

SCENE 29, LOADING ZONE IN FRONT OF SPRINGFIELD AIRPORT, MID- MORNING, THE NEXT DAY (DECEMBER 23)

Quinton helps Nola into the Jeep while a Skycap loads their packages and new luggage filled with their new wardrobe into the rear of the vehicle. Quint tips the Skycap and they are on their way.

N: Thank you for the trip to New York City, Quint. It was definitely a dream come true. And thank you for my necklace (she touches the glittering stones) I hadn't even thought to dream of something this amazing.

Q: It was definitely my pleasure, Nola. I love seeing you this happy.

Nola smiles radiantly and touches his cheek with her gloved hand.

Q: Well, Nola, I believe you mentioned wanting to do all the traditional things for Christmas. The shopping and wrapping seems to be complete. What next?

N: A tree, Quint.

Q: Very good. Let's go find one right now. I think I have some rope in the back there. We can tie it to the roof.

N: I think there's a good lot full of trees over on 9th and Lincoln. At least it still looked pretty full last week. I hope there's still some good ones left to choose from.

Q: We'll find something, Nola. Don't worry. Things seem to be going our way lately.

SCENE 30, CHRISTMAS TREE LOT, 9TH & LINCOLN

Quint and Nola stroll through the lot examining each tree carefully. They finally narrow it down to two choices, one about a foot taller than the other, although they both tower above Quint.

Q: What do you think, Nola? Which do you prefer?

N: Oh, they're both pretty.

She pauses to eye them again.

N: I like the taller one, but I guess we better go with the shorter one. The other one might not fit very well. Those ceilings at the boarding house aren't all that tall.

Q: I say we go with the larger one. I can always trim a bit off to make it fit if I have to.

N: O.K.

Quinton pays the sales person, who helps him lift the tree and tie it to the roof of the Jeep. They climb in and begin driving again. Nola looks out the window and hums along to the Christmas carols playing on the radio. Quint makes a turn that he didn't signal and Nola snaps out of her reverie.

N: Where are we going? The boardinghouse is in the other direction.

Q: I thought you said you didn't want to go back there.

N: Yes, but it's better than the Springfield Towers for Christmas. This tree will never fit in the suite, let alone in the elevator.

Q: Did I say we were going back to the Towers, Nola?

N: No, but if we're not going there...(vehemently) I'm not going out to that tent on the digsite. It's way too cold for that. I said a traditional Christmas, Quint. I meant a normal traditional one, not like all those other Christmases we've spent in tents from Tanquir to South America.

Q: Now Nola, trust me. I know what you meant.

He pulls into a gas station and stops by the full service gas pump.

Q: Wait just a minute. I'll be right back.

N: Quint!

He ignores her wail and speaks to the attendant who begins filling the tank. Nola waits, but impatiently. Quinton enters the gas station. After a few minutes he emerges and asks the attendant to check the oil and wash the windows. Nola becomes more agitated and curious. Finally, Quint pays the attendant and gets back in beside her.

N: Quint!

Q (slowly, with his crooked smile in place) Yes, Nola?

N: Oh no, don't you try that on me...You're up to something. What is it? Where are we going?

Quinton sighs and reaches for the red scarf still dangling about the neck of his overcoat.

Q: (mumbling to himself) I knew this would come in handy sooner or later.

He removes it from about his neck and reaches toward Nola with it.

N: Quint! What do you think you're doing?

She tries to pull away, but unsuccessfully. Quint begins blindfolding her.

N: Quint! Stop!

Q: (patiently) No, Nola, I'm simply trying to surprise you. I promise it's a very nice surprise and it won't be long at all until we arrive and I can remove this.

N: Arrive where?

Q: Now if I told you that it wouldn't be a surprise, now would it?

N: But Quint...

She reaches to grab him but misses, and then tries to pull the blindfold off. Quint stops her quickly and grabs her hands.

Q: Nola, will you behave? Or do I have to tie your hands with the other end of the scarf?

N: But Quint...

Q (a bit impatiently) Come on Nola. I promise you'll love this surprise. Make that plural. I have several in store for you.

N: Quint! Just tell me...

Q: No my dear, you'll just have to wait. I can see that I will have to tie these lovely hands down or you just might try that delicious little trick you told me about on our walk to Harry Winston. Although how you'd accomplish it in such a confined space...I've no idea.

He proceeds to tie her hands securely in front of her and silences her protests with a potent kiss that leaves her speechless. At least temporarily. The Jeep pulls out and Quint winks at the attendant, who had been clued in as to what might occur. They begin driving. After a time Nola finds her voice.

N: This is kidnapping you know.

Q: Ah, Nola, be patient. It won't be too much longer. Just a couple of hours.

N: (near-shriek) A couple of hours!!!

Q: (laughing) No, I'm teasing. It won't be that long. Really.

He drives about aimlessly, attempting to confuse Nola's sense of direction and kill some time. He answers each of Nola's inquiries as to where and how long sweetly but firmly non-commital.

SCENE 31, EXTERIOR OF A STATELY OLD HOME, 20 MINUTES LATER

Quint leads Nola up to a massive wooden door, which has been adorned with a huge festive Christmas wreath. Quint slowly unties the scarf and releases her hands. Nola pulls the blindfold off her face. He reaches for the scarf and wrests it away from her grip quickly. Her indignation is so great that she forgets to notice where they are.

N: Give me that back!

Q: Ah, ah, ah, this is mine now. I may need it again someday.

N: Quint, you don't think I'll let you do that again do you?

Q: You might...under the right set of circumstances. You might even enjoy it.

N: I don't know about that.

She finally looks about and sees the door before them, then takes in the house itself. A huge grin comes across Quint's face as he watches her reaction.

N: Thornway Road! What are we doing here? Who lives here?

Q: As to your first question, we are about to begin decorating for Christmas. As to the second question, we live here now, you and I, Mr. and Mrs. Quinton Chamberlain. If that meets your approval. We can begin living here right this minute and never leave again...how does that sound?

Nola flies into his arms and kisses him enthusiastically.

N: Oh! It sounds wonderful. I can't believe this. It's ours? How did you manage to buy it? When?

Q: Slow down, Nola. I bought it just after Thanksgiving. I made the previous owners and offer they couldn't refuse, so to speak. I spent the next couple of weeks getting everything ready inside and out. I was hoping that perhaps if my private little surprise party didn't win you over, that this house might. It is, after all, the site of the beginning of one of the greatest love stories of all time...ours, Nola.

N: (sighs) Oh, Quint. I love this house so much. I've missed it ever since we moved to Henry's.

Q: Much as I loved Father, some part of me wishes that we hadn't moved there to be with him. We never got a chance to start our marriage properly, to become our own little family. You and I and Stacey.

N: Really? I always wished we'd stayed here too. But at least we had that time with Henry.

Q: Time we can never get back. We missed so many years with him after we left for Tanquir. There's so much I wish I had said to him. To Vanessa, too. Like how much I loved them both, no matter how far away we were.

N: They knew.

Nola reaches out and holds Quinton in her arms for a long moment. She kisses him gently and turns her eyes to the door again, still locked in his embrace. As if her thoughts had willed it, the door slowly opens and from inside a familiar voice is heard, its proper British tones softened by the affection in the voice.

V: Hello, Nola, Quinton. My dears, how wonderful to see you.

Nola's face lights up like fireworks on the 4th of July. She and Quint enter the foyer together and each wrap an arm about Mrs. Renfield and enfold her in their embrace.

N: (in tears) Oh Violet, how we've missed you.

Q: (emotionally) Rennie, thank you so much for coming. We have indeed missed you.

V: And I have truly missed you both as well. It is so good to be back here in this house, with the two people I hold so dear.

Nola and then Quinton each hug her.

Q: Rennie, you look wonderful. Life in Scotland must be agreeing with you.

V: It has been quite pleasant, all in all. I did miss you both and the children so. Your visits were far too infrequent.

Q: I'm sorry.

V: Quinton, I understand. I've kept up with reports of your finds. I know how busy you've been. I'm very proud of you both. The two of you have accomplished so much together. Professor Renfield would be so proud.

Q: Thanks to Nola. I could have accomplished none of it without her.

Quinton pays silent tribute to his wife with a very meaningful look, then kisses her tenderly.

N: (slightly embarrassed) Well, thank you, but I'm sure you're giving me too much credit...Violet, when did you arrive? How long can you stay?

V: I've actually been here for several days now. Quinton rang me up and explained the surprise he had planned for you. When he requested my assistance in readying the house for you return, I agreed immediately. He helped me convince my sister, VIctoria, to close the hotel for a few weeks and come on holiday to the States with me. We shall be able to visit for another fortnight or so.

N: Wonderful! Where is Victoria?

V: Upstairs at the moment. She'll be down directly, I'm sure. Now, come inside and see what we've done.

The three of them step into the study and Nola gasps in amazement. The study of old has been recreated down to the last detail. Furniture, pillows, knick-knacks, and the two elephant tusks from the boardinghouse attic.

N: Oh my goodness...It looks exactly like it did so long ago. How did you manage this? You're amazing. Both of you.

Q: Why thank you, Nola

V: Quinton had done the majority of the work before my arrival. I was simply in charge of replicating the finer points of the decor.

N: Oh, it's like going back in time.

Q: Isn't it? You've done a magnificent job, Mrs. Renfield.

V: Well, I did have some help.

N: Victoria? How nice of her.

V: Oh dear, no, Victoria is very good at supervising. Someone else assisted my efforts.

N: AJ? Quinton, has J been in on this whole thing? Not just getting me to the country club and finding my engagement ring?

Q: Yes, Nola, J has been surprisingly helpful. But there's someone else I've relied on to keep J in line and to work out all the little details while we were, ahem, occupied these past few days.

N: (still puzzled) Who?

Just then an attractive, dark-haired young woman enters the study. Nola spots her and the mystery is solved.

N: Stacey!

S: (smiling) Hi Mom. Hello Daddy.

Nola and Stacey rush to hug one another. They murmur their greetings and I love you's to one another while Quinton and Violet give them a moment and then walk over to join them. Stacey hugs her father and kisses him on the cheek.

S: I love you, Daddy. I'm so happy for you two. For me, too. I missed having my family together.

Just then the front door opens and shuts loudly and J sweeps into the room carrying the Christmas tree.

J: Hey, Ma. Hey, Dad. You two finally get back? This where you want the tree?

N: Hello, J.

Q: J, glad you joined us. I would like to thank all of you for your efforts in helping me to surprise Nola. I could never have accomplished this without you.

J: No problem. It's actually kind of great to see you two back together.

V: You're quite welcome. Your happiness and joy will truly make this Christmas joyous for us all.

S: Let me go get the eggnog. This calls for a toast.

Q: J, give me the tree. I'll set it up over here near the fireplace. Where are the boxes of decorations you said you'd found in the boardinghouse attic?

J: (carrying the tree over to him) Here you go. I'll go get the boxes.

V: Let me go assist Anastasia with the refreshments.

N: Oh no you don't. You don't work here, Violet. You're our guest. I'll go help her. You stay put and supervise those two. They need supervision. Keep them out of trouble.

Nola seats Violet on the sofa and kisses her cheek. She exits the room humming "Joy to the World," and with visions of an old-fashioned family Christmas dancing in her head, she walks toward her new, but very familiar kitchen.
